David Drebin is one of the greatest photographers in the world. His work, marked by the images of Hollywood cinema, is full of mysterious and melancholic eroticism. He masterfully succeeds in balancing real and constructed elements.
David Drebin's works recount stories of beautiful, strong and self-sufficient women, staged glamorously and mysteriously. His women are always surrounded by an air of mystery that leaves room for the viewer's own imagination to unfold. The giant backdrops used by the artist are primarily night views of glittering metropolises like New York, Hong Kong, Paris - or remote beaches and rocky coastlines that offer the viewer unlimited room to let the imagination roam.
His works are full of emotions and experiences and can best be described as "filmic". Drebin's style is shaped by the images of Hollywood cinema, as well as by Guy Bourdin, whom he references again and again. Drebin masterfully succeeds in balancing real and constructed elements. His artistic intention is to free the viewer from the rules of daily routine and to pull him deeper and deeper into the events within the image. As a photographer, Drebin creates complex narratives and depicts sensual, provocative and almost surrealistic moments.
From resplendent panoramas or cinematic, glamorously staged moments, Drebin always tackles big emotions like humour, love and sex. David Drebin's work plays with the American dream, with all of its hopes and illusions. At first glance, the world that David Drebin pictures is the world of the rich and the beautiful. Only at a second glance do the strong emotions under the seamlessly smooth surface become apparent, sometimes only indicated by a gesture, a glance, a tear, a movement or action.
David Drebin was born in Ontario, Canada and has been living in New York since concluding his studies at the Parsons School of Design.
